The 10th of November 2017, numerous Saudi Arabian princes and business people including billionaires and government ministers were arrested in Saudi Arabia which then followed the creation of an ‘anti-corruption’ committee led by the ambitious Prince Mohamed Bin Salman, also known as MBS.
Different alternatives have been proposed to justify the act of the new prince: a way of eliminating corruption, a strategy to gain money or a preparation for the prince to take over the crown.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Saudi government has taken over assets and properties worth up to $800 billion. Attorney General Sheikh Saud Al Motjeb said that the arrests were “merely the start of a vital process to root out corruption wherever it exists.” The detained had permission to hold trials and defend their purpose. MBS, Prince Mohamed Bin Salman stated that “We show them all the files that we have and as soon as they see those about 95 percent agree to a settlement… 1 percent are able to prove they are clean and their case is dropped right there, and 4 percent say they are not corrupt and with their lawyers want to go to court.”
Some rumors have spread that the new prince, MBS, wants to change his country. He wants a more open, modern, and safe country for his citizens and future tourists. He told investors in Riyadh that “We are returning to what we were before, a country of moderate Islam that is open to all religions and to the world”. He has declared he wanted to counter “extremism very soon”.
